’Stranger in a Strange land ’: the Outsiders in China

Hernández, L.

Abstract:
The aim of this paper is to discuss a range of issues that surround the notion of the Outsider in intercultural settings. The discussion takes place within neo-traditional China , a country where the intersection of ‘ the new‘ and ‘the old‘, ‘tradition‘ and ‘change‘ creates new dynamics in the experience of the Other. Not only expatriates are Othered in China but Chinese people too. As part of China‘s intern al migration, Chinese migrants move across regions in search for better opportunities for their lives. The Chinese migrant becomes an outsider as he is labelled according to prevailing notions on the Other. This study demonstrates that stereotypes play an important role in day-to -day encounters amid locals and non-locals in China. Chinese migrants are rendered as outsiders in their own country while they hold on to conventional views about the locals too.
