Abstract:
Advanced English is a specialized subject commonly provided to students majoring in English language or literature in their third year and fourth year learning in colleges in countries where English is not a native language. It is designed to train students’ comprehensive linguistic skills including reading comprehension, understanding figures of speech and writing ability. But, with the spreading use of multimedia in English education, Advanced English teaching is facing more and more challenges than before. Although innovative theories and methods have been introduced to the field of foreign language teaching, most of them focus on the enhancement of basic and principle knowledge of the English language and the acquisition of communicative competence. Much less attention has ever been paid to the issue of how to improve the effectiveness of Advanced English teaching. The traditional teaching method which emphasizes information conveyance doesn’t work well, especially when multimedia devices are being used in class. This paper suggests that reception aesthetic theory should be applied to the teaching of Advanced English in order to promote the interaction between teachers and students in class, optimize teaching and learning modes, and make the multimedia device a more powerful teaching platform. This study discusses some reasons and implications of the application of this method and examines the possibility to widen students’ horizon in Advanced English learning and the advantages of their more active engagement in class.
