Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to compare the needs of foreign language instructors of both genders with different lengths of service and to explore the needs factors that motivate instructors of English, German and French. To collect data, a questionnaire was administered to 73 instructors working at the School of Foreign Languages at Selçuk University. It was found that the order of importance for needs factors was as follows: Relations, responsibility, self-realization, appreciation, power and living. There were significant differences across genders for these six factors. There are statistical differences between male and female instructors in terms of need for living, power and responsibility. Women’s need for living was stronger than that of men. Females’ need for living is stronger than that of males. Males’ need for power is stronger than that of females. Females’ need for responsibility is stronger than that of males. There was not a significant difference across genders in terms of length of service. However, when the details of the needs factors are examined, it is seen that the mean scores vary across different lengths of service.
