OZLEM KAYA

Abstract:

Design education, which can be explained as a discipline with the aim of teaching a specific art by taking into consideration the relation between various art branches and their common laws, rules and methods, is a very important issue to build design power. Basic design education even called under different names across the world such as basic design, visual design and applied design forms the basis of art and design through its theoretical and practical program based on Bauhaus applications. Design education is necessary for individuals to think, define, associate, apply what they know, and work in a changing environment. It is necessary to encourage wondering, imagining, making observations, conducting researches, and evaluating the clues, in order to find alternative solutions and approach to problems critically and creatively. The shaping of art education is related to the forming of basic design in a correct, qualified, creative context. This process includes creativity, art and craft, requiring all of them to be nested together. This study aims to examine basic design education in the framework of the academic programs of higher education institutions that provide education in the field of design, and also to transfer the effects of receiving this education on individuals. For this purpose, the relevant programs in higher education institutions providing education in this area in Turkey were examined, and the status of design education have been tried to be revealed. At this point, some suggestions have been developed focusing on the necessity of design education especially in fine arts and engineering fields.
