DEVELOPING INTERACTIVE SELF-ACCESS ENGLISH E-LEARNING RESOURCES ON LEARNING MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

Abstract:

Many universities invest a learning management system (LMS) which provides teachers with a way to create, deliver and manage course content and learning resources to students. This web-based technology, however, is generally underutilised as a platform to upload handouts and submit assignments. Many features within a LMS are available to help teachers develop effective and interactive learning materials. This paper illustrates an on-going project for the development of a self-directed e-learning scheme on LMS to enhance weaker students’ English language proficiency in a university. Through this e-learning platform, students can first identify areas of strength and limitation in language needs for learning academic and professional knowledge at the university via a diagnostic quiz. Based on the students’ individual needs identified from the quiz, they can practise from a range of subject-specific e-learning language activities. Post-quizzes are offered to measure students’ performance after engaging in the online activities. The experience in developing technology-facilitated learning materials using different features available on LMS and integrating other web applications for discipline-specific academic English will be shared and discussed. Approaches, considerations and steps in developing e-learning materials for English language enhancement will be illustrated.
