SURVEY OF THE SATISFACTION OF THE BIO-MEDICAL TECHNOLOGY STUDENTS ABOUT THEIR STUDY PROGRAM AND THE COLLEGE LIFE. DATA FROM MACAO POLYTECHNIC INSTITUTE

Abstract:

Macao Polytechnic institute has shifted from a traditional teaching method to a student-centered learning in recent years. Recently, a questionnaire survey was conducted to investigate the satisfaction of the students and alumni. Their satisfaction about the study program and the school, self-evaluation and the happiness in the college life were measured and the relationship with the satisfaction was also explored. Study purpose: 1. Through a questionnaire survey, the satisfaction of the bio-medical technology students was evaluated. 2. The relationship between satisfaction and other variables such as subject selection, self-evaluation and future plan after graduation. Method: 1. Through a convenient sampling, a total 96 current students and graduated students were selected (year1-4 were 17, 19, 24, 19 separately and alumni=17). 2. The questionnaire for the survey consists of 4 inventories that investigated the satisfaction of the students and alumni about the program, self-evaluation, about the institute, and the happiness of the college life. The answers based on 5 likert scales. The reliability tests were conducted and cronbach’s alphas ranged from 0.934, 0.915, 0.843 and 0.787 separately. 3. The questionnaire was filled in by the students and alumni anonymously. The participants’ identification and privacy were well protected. 4. Data were entered twice for mistake checking. 5. Data analysis was conducted by the IBM-SPSS version 20. Result: 1. The mean scores of the satisfaction were 3.85 for the study program, 3.47 for self-evaluation, 3.55 for the college and 3.26 for the college life. 2. Comparison to the students in the different school years, the year 3 students had lowest mean scores in program satisfaction, self-evaluation, satisfaction to the institute and happiness in the college life. Except the program satisfaction, other differences were statistical significant (p<0.05). 3. The students, who joined the program not based on their choice and who said would not take the program again if they have chance to do so, had lowest mean values in all 4 inventory mean scores. 4. No statistic significances among the students who had difference future plan or careers. Conclusion: 1. The test students are basically satisfied with the current course design. 2. Their self-evaluations were more towards positive. 3. The students satisfied the environment and the support from the institute. 4. The students basically enjoy the college life. 5. Year 3 students had the lowest satisfaction and more efforts should focus on them. Some modification may need to be done for this group.
