APPROACHING STUDENTS BASED ON THEIR OWN CIRCUMSTANCES - THE IMPORTANCE OF ENGAGING

HAFDÍS BJÖRG HJÁLMARSDÓTTIR

Abstract:

The University of Akureyri emphasis flexible learning which is available for all undergraduate studies. That means all lectures are recorded. Because of that more and more students choose not to attend the classroom and most students live far away from the campus. Flexible learning comes with challenges. Traditional teaching methods and assignments are no longer sufficient to achieve the learning standards of courses. In my presentation I intend to introduce modified and mixed teaching methods in my courses. With the aim of reaching and better engaging students. I use recordings of lectures, review sessions in the classroom and in Zoom, and project sessions where attendance is mandatory. In the course, I make sure that students use a variety of methods and creative approaches when working on projects. I also use a variety of assessment methods. Research results show that students are happy with these changes, especially the change to offer podcasts where people from the business world are invited to give an insight into their work.
