CHALLENGES AND DIFFICULTIES OF LEARNING ARABIC AS A FOREIGN LANGUAGE AT TERTIARY LEVEL

HUDA AL-TAMIMI

Abstract:

Learners of Arabic as a foreign language often face challenges and difficulties due a number of factors such as script, grammar, sentence structure and phonetics. Some commonly accepted causes include lack of practice, teaching methods, textbooks, and resources. This paper addresses the problems associated with AFL learning which affect teaching in that language. One of the main hurdles for learners and teachers of the target language is that a foreign language is a language studied in an environment where it is not the primary vehicle for daily interaction and where input in that language is restricted. The paper will also look at language learning styles and strategies as the main factors that help determine how students learn a foreign language.
