CORE GLOBAL VALUES, INTERNATIONAL MIGRATION AND TERRORISM

EREZ ZRUBAVEL SHOSHANI

Abstract:

International Migration has become a salient topic in the last two decades for both academics and policy makers. One reason for that was and still is the expectation that International Migrations' patterns and numbers will follow the post-cold war trend of economic globalization. That is, the expectation is for a significant rise in the number of migrants and for a more open immigration policy especially in western countries. Although the absolute number of migrants has risen during that time it is still low considering the rise in the global population and does not exhibit a fundamental change in comparison to other time frames in the 20th century. A prominent explanation for the discrepancy between real life facts and the expectations has to do with international security concerns, especially terrorism. This explanation will be examined in this paper while addressing the question: what may cause migration policies in the west to be more open? This question will be discussed while analyzing the importance of the dissemination of important core values and norms of globalizations such as human rights and global identity.
