LIFELONG LEARNING EDUCATION IN GLOBAL CONTEXT: THEORETICAL AND PRACTICAL CONSIDERATIONS

Wisdom is not a product of schooling, but the lifelong attempt to acquire it.” — Einstein Learning can no longer be bifurcated in present times i.e. Learning in schools (place to acquire knowledge) and Learning at workplaces (place to apply knowledge). Education has profoundly changed in the past decades and the academic enterprises are struggling with the implications of the changes. All over the world, almost all academic institutions are facing some pressures in one way or in other like Social and Economic role of Higher Education, Impact of new technologies, demand of Accountability etc. Because of some common historical roots of all academic institutions worldwide, all face some common contemporary challenges. Rapid changes in environment necessitates efficient application of new knowledge and new skills. This could only be met satisfactorily only through continual learning i.e. learning how to do and how to live together. Life Long Learning is considered as a necessity as it creates the challenge to explore, to understand and to support new dimensions of learning. For the survival in the 21st century, everyone needs to involve in lifelong learning. As Education is a continuous and lifelong process, it plays an important role in developing all dimensions of the individual. Lifelong learning is very significant if youths have to thrive rich knowledge, today’s changing world and the immediate future. Lifelong learning means to engage people with learning throughout their life. The present paper examines the current status of Lifelong Learning Education with its objectives. Various issues and challenges in promoting lifelong learning are also discussed and the major programmes for promoting lifelong learning are also suggested.
