THE USAGE OF COMMON VERBS BY TURKISH ELEMENTARY LEVEL STUDENTS: CONCEPTUAL TRANSFER FROM LEXICAL AND GRAMMATICAL PERSPECTIVE

Abstract:

Looking at the interference of previously known or learnt language on the second done, conceptual transfer is a bridge between cross-linguistic influence and linguistic relativity (Jarvis, 2017). Conceptual transfer is interested in the effect of previously known languages on the mental construction and verbal expressions of meanings in a second language (Jarvis, 201). This study focuses on Turkish L2 learners of English at elementary level and conceptual transfer in their written products. A database including 65,441 tokens formed by compiling learners’ written tasks. This database was analyzed and most common verbs were determined via AntConc 3.4.4., and further analysis was carried out on five of them in detail to see possible conceptual transfer error. The results showed that most common five verbs were "be, live, have, want, and like"; and their usage suggested the possible effects of conceptual transfer.
