TEACHING AND LEARNING FOR DIVERSITY

BLYE FRANK

Abstract:

Though the right to equality is enshrined in law in Canada, several leading Canadian universities and their Faculties of Education have developed additional policies to promote and foster inclusion, equity, and diversity on their campuses. University and Faculty strategic plans give attention to human rights, Indigenous engagement, social justice, and transformative education, in order to cultivate an approach to teaching and learning that moves beyond celebrating multiculturalism to taking difference into account. It is through first understanding and then grappling with the complexities of how diversity exists in our schools that educators are better equipped to create positive school climates that promote inclusive and equitable learning environments for all students.
