PENN STATE'S ONLINE INTERCOLLEGE MASTER OF PROFESSIONAL STUDIES IN HOMELAND SECURITY PROGRAM: EVOLUTION, STRENGTHS, CHALLENGES, AND LESSONS LEARNED

ALEXANDER SIEDSCHLAG

Abstract:

Penn State's Intercollege Master of Professional Studies in Homeland Security Program that has its 10th anniversary in September is delivered 100% online across the U.S. and around the world by Penn State World Campus and the University's largest online graduate program. Evolved into a collaboration of now eight colleges, it follows an approach of continuous evolution as the homeland security domain remains a moving target. The program is a professional master's program, focused on mid-career professionals. In addition, it also seeks to serve younger, more traditional students who seek to lay the basis for a career in the homeland security mission space. The presentation will address success, challenges, and lessons learned in learning management systems, evolving course content management, elements of residency, striking the balance between training students in advanced study of homeland security and response to emerging workforce requirements, as well as addressing academic integrity issues.
